Martha and Arthur

I do not have much time today, so this may be a short post.  I admit that it is intended to give you a sneak peek at the topic of tomorrow’s post, which will be the product of another new guest blogger.

Martha Marie Stemmermann was born on October 20, 1884 in the Salem Township of Perry County.  She was baptized at Salem Lutheran Church in Farrar.  Martha was the daughter of Herman and Anna Maria (Heidt) Stemmermann.  This is her baptism record.

Herman and Anna Maria had all daughters.  In this photo of the Stemmermann family, Martha is said to be the one standing on the far left.

On September 6, 1906, Martha married Arthur Alwin Aurich (A.A.A.) at Trinity Lutheran Church in Altenburg.  This is the marriage record from the Trinity church books.

Arthur was the son of Adolph and Josephine (Antonier) Aurich.  He was born on August 14, 1883 and baptized at Salem Lutheran Church in Farrar.  This is his baptism record.

Based on the baptism records of their children, Arthur and Martha Aurich must have moved around several times.  Their first child, Erwin, was baptized at Salem, Farrar.

Their second child, Irma, was baptized at Trinity, Altenburg.

The third child, Raymond, was baptized at Concordia Lutheran Church in Frohna.

Their last child, Franziska, was baptized at Salem, Farrar, as was their first child.

This last daughter was born in 1917.  It must not have been long after this child was born that the Aurichs picked up and moved to another state.  The 1920 census shows them living in Bunker Hill, Nebraska.  As near as I can tell, Bunker Hill was an area not far form Potter and Sidney, Nebraska.  (Note: Two other children were shown on the next page of this census that I chose not to show.)

When I imagine this move from Missouri to Nebraska, I picture this family making the trip by train.  They very well could have boarded a train in Wittenberg or one of the other depots located in Perry County…maybe Menfro.  Then they could have found connections all the way to Sidney or Potter.  This 1915 map of Cheyenne County in Nebraska shows the railroads that were already in place by then.

In the 1930 census, the Aurichs were found in the Lodgepole Township, and then in the 1940 census, they were in Sidney.  Until 1940, Arthur was shown as a farmer in all the census records.  In 1940, it says he was a laborer on a road project.

Arthur died in 1964; Martha died in 1970.  They are buried together in the Greenwood Cemetery in Sidney, Nebraska.

Arthur was not the only Aurich to move to Cheyenne County, Nebraska.  A previous story told about his brother’s migration to Nebraska in a post titled, Farrar Off to the Potter’s Field.  Tomorrow, we will be sharing another very special story about this area of Nebraska and its connections to Perry County.
