Exactly 68 years after Abraham Lincoln was born, and about 12 years after his assassination, Ida Kutscher was born in Shawnee Township in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri.  She was born on February 12, 1877.   She was the daughter of John and Henrietta (Krause) Kutscher and baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church in New Wells.  Here is her baptism record.

The first census in which we see Ida was the 1880 census from Shawnee Township.  She was one of the youngest children in her family.

Later during 1877, another child was born in Shawnee Township and baptized at Immanuel, New Wells.  His name was Ernst Hemmann, who was born on August 28, 1877.  His parents were Gustav and Margaretha (Streit) Hemmann.  Our German Family Tree shows 13 children born into that family, with Ernst being the second one, making him one of the oldest in his family.  Below is his baptism record.

Ida was the 2nd child baptized at Immanuel, New Wells in 1877, and you can see on the above record that Ernst was the 14th.  The 1880 census for Shawnee Township is also the first in which we find Ernst.

Gustav Hemmann owned a farm near Shawneetown.  It can be seen in the map below.

Even though Ida and Ernst were born in the same year, they were not in the same confirmation class.  Ida was in the 1890 class, while Ernst was in the 1891 class.  We can see them both on this page from the Immanuel, New Wells confirmation records.

On April 8, 1901, Ernst and Ida were married.  Their wedding is recorded in the Immanuel, New Wells church books.  Below is an image of that record.

The 1910 census shows Ernst and Ida also living in the Shawnee Township.  By 1910, they had five of the eight children born into their family.  One son that was born later in 1910 would die just one year later in 1911.

Ida’s younger sister, Lydia, was living with this family in 1910.  She would stay single all her life.

Ernst would be a farmer in the Shawneetown area all his life.  He died in 1937 at the age of 60.  Here is his death certificate.

Both Ernst and Ida are buried in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Pocahontas.

This morning, I was paging through a Hemmann Family Binder that we have in our museum and found a photograph of the Gustav Hemmann family.

We know that this photo was taken before 1918, because Gustav died in that year (contrary to this photograph saying he died in 1919).  If the occasion was the 40th anniversary for Gustav and Margaretha, then this photo was taken in 1913.  Ernst is standing in the back row.  He and his father are the only Hemmann men sporting mustaches.

I wish I had found this photo earlier.  It would have been a useful one to have in the previous posts I have written about this family.  There is going to be a Hemmann family reunion this summer, and I have been asked to make a presentation to them about their family history.  I know this photo will have to be a centerpiece of that presentation.
