Hoehl to the Other Gustav Meyr

Back in May of this year, I wrote a post titled, A Meyr Multitude, in which the highlighted character was Gustav Meyr.  In his case, he was Gustav Adolph Meyr, and it was pointed out that he and his descendants take up 6 pages in our German Family Tree.  It was also discussed in that article that there was another Gustav Meyr born during the same year as Gustav Adolph Meyr.  The other one was Gustav Heinrich Meyr, and he would have been the uncle of G.A. Meyr.  G.H. Meyr will be one of the highlighted characters in this story.  He was not nearly as prolific as his nephew, only taking up about one page in the GFT.

Before we get to G.H. Meyr, let’s discuss today’s birthday girl, who would eventually become Mrs. G.H. Meyr.  Her name was Christina Hoehl, and today would have been her 150th birthday.  Christina was born on June 28, 1870, the daughter of Johann and Maria (Heinig) Hoehl.  Even though a previous Hoehl child had been baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church in New Wells, and a later Hoehl child was baptized at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Pocahontas, Christina was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Altenburg.  I am once again out of town, so I am unable to display that baptism record today.

I was unable to find the Hoehl family in either the 1870 census or the 1880 census.  It is likely that Christina would have been born too late in 1870 to be included anyway, but I should have been able to locate her parents.  I suspect the Hoehl surname (which we would pronounce as “Hail”) was somehow misspelled.  I tried other likely misspellings, but was unsuccessful.  So, I am unable to display any census records for Christina when she was still single.

Now, we will return to Gustav Heinrich Meyr, the son of Johann and Theresia (Ebener) Meyr.  This Gustav Meyr was born on October 17, 1864.  I am not exactly sure where he was baptized.  We find some records for him in the books of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Pocahontas, but that church had yet to be established in 1864.  Later records for him can be found at Immanuel, New Wells, but his baptism record is not there either.  We do know that he would later be confirmed at St. John’s, Pocahontas.

Gustav H. Meyr can be found in the 1870 census for Shawnee Township at the age of 5.  In fact, in that previous post about Gustav A. Meyr, I mistakenly showed this census record for Gustav H. Meyr.  His father had died prior to 1870 because his mother, Theresia, is shown as the head of the household.

Gustav can next be found in the 1880 census at the age of 15.  Both of these census records indicate that Gustav was the baby of his family.

That leads us up to the marriage of Gustav H. Meyr and Christina Hoehl on January 31, 1892.  They were married at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Pocahontas.  Unfortunately, the only marriage record I can display is the variety on which you can only see when the application for the license was made and when the license was recorded after the marriage took place.

Between 1893 and 1897, Gustav and Christina had their 4 children, one of which died soon after birth.  We see the Meyr household in the 1900 census.  Gustav was a farmer his whole life.

Next, we find the Meyr family in the 1910 census.

The last census in which we find Gustav was the one taken in 1920.  This is the census in which we find both of the Gustav Meyr’s listed right next to each other.  Gustav H. Meyr is the listing at the bottom of this image.

Gustave died on April Fool’s Day of 1926 at the age of 61.  His death certificate mentions both pneumonia and influenza as contributing to his death.

Gustav was buried in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in New Wells, Missouri.  In fact, both Gustav Meyr’s are buried in that cemetery.

Christina can be found in two more census records.  First, we find her in the 1930 census living with her single son, John Meyr.  They were living in the Brazeau Township in Perry County.

When the 1940 census was taken, Christina was living with her other single son, Benjamin Meyr.

Christina Meyr died in 1949 at the age of 79.  I am pretty sure she was living with her daughter, Anna (Meyr) Kaempfe, when she died in Perryville.

Christina Meyr was buried in the Concordia Lutheran Cemetery in Frohna, Missouri.  Her gravestone is the same style as her husband’s, but she is buried in a different cemetery.

As near as I could tell, the two Meyr sons never married, so there were no Meyr descendants to come from this branch of the Meyr family.  Many more came from the other Gustav Meyr.
