Earlier this month, I wrote a story about a Schuppan that married a Vogel in the Shawnee Township of Cape Girardeau County, Missouri.  Today, I will tell the tale of another Schuppan/Vogel marriage that took place a few generations earlier.  In the course of looking into today’s couple, I discovered that the Schuppan and Vogel names may have been connected to each other already on the ship that brought them to America.

I located a passenger list for a ship called Phoenix that arrived in the United States in 1834, five years before the Gesellschaft arrived in this country.  It includes passengers with both Vogel and Schuppan surnames.  Let’s take a look.

The Schuppan/Vogel marriage I will be discussing today unites Adolph Schuppan and Emilie Caroline Vogel.  I believe that these two individuals are on the above list.  Let’s figure out which ones they were.  After all, only initials are given for the first names of these passengers.

Adolph Schuppan was born on November 28, 1802.  I admit that I cannot find that date of birth in our German Family Tree, but several Ancestry entries list this as his birthday and birth year.  If that is the case, then, of the two A. Schuppan names on the passenger list, the top one would have been Adolph.  He would have been 32 years old in 1834.  I could locate no names for Adolph’s parents.

Emilie Caroline Vogel was born on July 25, 1815.  This birthday is etched on her gravestone.  So Emilie is today’s birthday girl.  She would be celebrating her 205th birthday if she was still alive.  Emilie Caroline would have been 19 years old in 1834 when she was a passenger on the Phoenix.  I think she would be the C. Vogel who is the third name from the bottom.   I find it interesting that there was another A. Schuppan on the ship that was the same age as Emilie, but she married the one that was 13 years older.  Emilie was the daughter of Salomon and Johanna (Bitterich) Vogel.  Those two would be the 52 and 49 year-olds on the passenger list.  Their son, listed underneath them, August Vogel, has over 20 pages of descendants in our GFT.  The 7 year-old Sophia Vogel would eventually be Rev. Keyl’s third wife.

Another piece of background information is found in this list of Salomon, Sr.’s children, all born in Germany.  The second child in this list is Emilie’s father, Salomon, Jr.   Child #6, Karl Wilhelm, was another child from this family that ended up in America.

Upon arrival in the United States, the Vogel’s and Schuppan’s resided near Beardstown, Illinois for a while.  It is there that Adolph Schuppan married Emilie Caroline Vogel on June 13, 1836.  The Illinois marriage record for this couple is displayed below.  Beardstown is located in Morgan County, Illinois.

The next location for the Schuppan couple was in Scott County, Missouri.  A land record shows Adolph buying a piece of property in that county in 1848.

The Schuppan’s did not remain in Scott County for very long.  We find them living in the Brazeau Township of Perry County in the 1850 census.  Adolph is called a cabinet maker.

We know that Adolph Schuppan was hired by the Presbyterians in Brazeau to help them build their new church in 1853.  Then in 1854, we find Adolph buying another piece of property in Perry County.  Below is the record for that land purchase.

The above record says the land he purchased was in the southwest quarter of section 19.  We can see that location in the 1915 land map shown here.

The southwest section would have been the parcels then owned by M.J. Popp.  You can also locate a parcel not far away that was owned by August Vogel, Emilie Caroline’s brother.  You can also see that this land was found just outside the village of Frohna.

Next, we find the Schuppan household in the 1870 census at the same location.  Adolph is called a carpenter.

The Schuppan’s only son, Ludwig, got married in 1864.  He married Rosine Lehner whose family lived in Shawnee Township of Cape Girardeau County.  That marriage took place at Immanuel Lutheran Church in New Wells.  I think it was this marriage that resulted in Adolph and Emilie Schuppan living in that area at the time of their deaths.

Adolph Schuppan died in 1867 at the age of 64.  Below is his death record from Immanuel Lutheran Church in New Wells.

A Missouri state census was taken for Shawnee Township in 1868.  In that census, we find Emilie Caroline living in the household of her son, Ludwig Schuppan.  She is called Amelia.

Emilie Caroline Schuppan died in 1897 at the age of 82.  Here is her death record from Immanuel, New Wells.

I could not find a gravestone for Adolph, but Emilie Caroline’s is displayed on Findagrave and located in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in New Wells.

One of the children in this Schuppan family, Mathilde, married Wilhelm Alexander Vogel, who was probably the Alexander shown in the 1870 census above.  I believe he was a descendant of the Salomon Vogel’s younger brother, Karl Wilhelm, who was mentioned earlier.

The Emilie Schuppan that was a character in the post, Blacksmith to Mechanic, written recently, was a grandchild of today’s Schuppan/Vogel couple.  I am guessing that the Emilie in that story was named after her grandmother.

Today’s Schuppan/Vogel couple also named one of their daughters Emilie Caroline Schuppan.  She would go on to marry Rev. Wilhelm Mueller, a Lutheran pastor.

I know of a pair of Schuppan twins who were raised in St. Louis.  Each of them married friends of mine who were full-time church workers, one a Lutheran pastor and one a Lutheran educator.  I also was on the same teaching staff for a short time with one of the Schuppan twins.  I know those Schuppan’s claim that their family had origins in New Wells, Missouri.  I strongly suspect that they can claim Adolph and Emilie Caroline as their ancestors.
