If you do a search on this blog for the term, “wedding photo”, the first 5 results will be posts with the title, “Stories from a Wedding Photo”. I will once again pull out this wedding photo today to tell yet another tale that comes from a person in that photo. I have placed a red arrow above the girl who is character in today’s post. Her name was Maria Lohmann.

The caption to this photo describes her as Maria (Lohmann) Miesner. She is also standing next to a Miesner, but that is not the Miesner who will be paired with Maria today. I do know this. When I write a Miesner story, I know there is a great chance of getting confused in the process. The same thing can be said for writing a story about a Lohmann. Today, you get a story in which a Lohmann marries a Miesner. It’s not the first blog post told about a Miesner marrying a Lohmann. That wedding involved a younger brother of today’s Miesner.

I will begin by looking at the person who has a birthday for January 10th. Herman Emmanuel Miesner was born on January 10, 1881, the son of Claus and Margaret (Ehlers) Miesner. Herman was baptized at Salem Lutheran Church in Farrar. An image of his baptism record is pictured here.

Because we cannot view the 1890 census, the first one in which can see Herman Miesner was the one taken in 1900. Since his family was living in the Salem Township, that means we have to look at one of those census entries that are so difficult to read. Herman was 19 years old, and he was working on his father’s farm.

Herman was still single when the 1910 census was taken. Once again, we see that Herman was working on his father’s farm.

We can see where the Claus Miesner farm was located in the plat maps produced for Perry County in 1915. It was quite near the village of Farrar.

Now, we need to turn our attention to the woman identified in the previous wedding photo. Marie Katherine Lohmann was born on February 4, 1890, the daughter of Peter and Margaret (Versemann) Lohmann. Marie was also baptized at Salem Lutheran Church in Farrar. Her baptism record is displayed below.

Marie is found in the 1900 census living in the Salem Township. That means we have to look at another miserable image. Marie was 10 years old at the time.

It was in 1905 that Marie appeared in the above wedding photo. I figure she must have been about 15 years old in that photo. Next, we find Marie in the 1910 census at the age of 20.

Herman Miesner married Marie Lohmann on April 27, 1911 at Salem Lutheran Church. We can take a look at the church record for that event.

The marriage license for Herman and Marie is pictured below.

This couple never had any children. In 1917, Herman had to have a World War I draft registration completed. It gave his address as Seventy-Six, Missouri.

In the 1920 census, even though their family included only Herman and Marie, their entry spilled over two census pages.

The last census in which we find Herman Miesner was the one taken in 1930.

Sometime after the above census was taken, Herman and Marie moved to Alva, Oklahoma. Like I’ve pointed out in several previous posts, Alva is a location where several Perry County natives settled. In this case, I know that several members of the Lohmann family were already living in and near Alva. Herman Miesner died in 1937 at the age of 56. His death record can be found in the books of Zion Lutheran Church in Alva. The cause of death is given as Schlag, which I believe means he had a stroke.

I figured that I should be able to find Marie Miesner in the 1940 census for Alva, but I was unable to find her in that enumeration. She would not die until 1978 at the age of 88. That death record is also found in the books of Zion Lutheran Church in Alva. No cause of death is listed.

Both Herman and Marie Miesner were buried at the Lutheran Cemetery in Alva, but Findagrave.com only has a gravestone photo for Herman, not Marie.

Herman and Marie are the only Miesner’s buried in that cemetery, but there are quite a few Lohmann’s buried there. After her husband’s death, Marie lived over 40 more years. At least she must have had some of her Lohmann relatives living in that area despite the fact that she had no children.

I did not take the time to check if I have covered every person in the wedding photo in a blog past, but if I haven’t, I should be awfully close to having accomplished that mission.
