Yesterday, I was wondering if another Bertha would show up for today’s story. That did not happen. However, like yesterday, one of today’s characters is a Schuessler. Ida Josephine Schuessler was born on March 19, 1881, so today would be her 141st birthday. Ida was the daughter of Gotthilf and Sarah (Saalfeld) Schuessler. A previous … More Ida and Anton in Somerset
I will begin today with a birthday boy, Ernst Wilhelm Victor Koenig, who was born on February 10, 1897. That makes today a fairly special 125th birthday. This boy would mostly go by the name, William, during his life, so that is what I will call him. His parents were Ernst and Magdalena (Roth) Koenig. … More Another Franke/Koenig Couple Two Generations Later
You will read another one of those stories today in which the husband and wife were each born, baptized, confirmed, married, raised their family, died, and buried while attending the same church. It’s a story that takes place entirely at Salem Lutheran Church in Farrar. The sad part of the story is that the husband … More Herman and Maria – A Versemann/Koenig Pair
The first character we will examine today would be celebrating his 125th birthday (or was it his 126th? or the 127th). His name was Edmund Paul Hoehn, who was born on January 16, 1897…maybe. There is some debate about the year of his birth which I will discuss as we go along. His parents were … More Buried with First Spouse
Clara Emilie Weinhold was born on January 13, 1864, so if she was still alive today, she would have to blow out 158 candles on her birthday cake. Clara was the 4th child out of 6 children born to her parents, Wilhelm and Emilie (Lindner) Weinhold. That qualifies her to be among what has been … More A Weinhold Becomes a Koenig Up Farrar Way
It is a rare occasion when I get a couple that shares the same birthday, but that is true about today’s pair. So, today I can say we have both a birthday girl and and birthday boy. Let’s start with the oldest of the two. Friedrich Koenig was born on December 23, 1833 in Korbußen, … More Koenig-Hecht Share a Birthday
The story for today has similarities to the one that was published yesterday. In looking for a story yesterday, I saw a marriage between a Fritsche and a Lorenz and figured I had already written that story since those two names were quite prominent in the Farrar area. I looked carefully before concluding that I … More Mary’s Dear God Warning
One of the common first names for Germans from the Hanover area that settled in Perry County is Claus. Also, there are two churches in this area that had several men included in their membership with the name, Claus. Those two churches are Immanuel Lutheran Church in Altenburg and Salem Lutheran Church in Farrar. Today’s … More Claus’s Wives – Two Thurm’s and a Koenig
I happened to be working at the Lutheran Heritage Center & Museum yesterday along with my buddy, Gerard Fiehler. We had finished assisting some guests from Illinois and North Dakota who had come to see our museum. I had already completed yesterday’s post and then began looking for a story for today. That process led … More A Franke Discussion
I intended to write today’s story yesterday, but as it turned out, my time was taken up by other tasks. One of the events that took up my time was a special, unexpected event that took place yesterday. One of our local residents, Dale Roth, works on the Mississippi River as a towboat captain. I … More Gustav and Bertha Koenig – MO to MI
