Martha Loeber died on February 12, 1895. According to many (but not all) historians, Martha was a member of the first class to attend the Log Cabin College in 1839. Her brother, Christoph, was also attending there during that first year. Martha and Christoph were children of Rev. Gotthold Loeber, pastor in the new town of Altenburg. Martha married Theodore Ernst Buenger, thus making her the sister-in-law of Johann Friedrich Buenger, one of the builders of the Log Cabin College, and C.F.W. Walther, first president of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. Their marriage took place in the relatively new church sanctuary in Altenburg in 1848. Because that church building still stands and is part of the Lutheran Heritage Center & Museum, it can still be visited today. The Log Cabin College is also on exhibit at this museum. Theodore Ernst (also known as Cantor) Buenger was a teacher in Lutheran schools. He served schools in St. Louis and New Orleans before spending most of his career at Immanuel First Lutheran School in Chicago. Cantor Buenger was well-known for his musical abilities both as a singer and an organist. It is likely that Martha’s home was filled with good music.

Since Martha Loeber married into the Buneger family, she is a relatively prominent character in “Mama Buenger”.
