Christina and Her Boys

In a way, today’s tale is a continuation of the one that was told yesterday. However, you will have to wait a bit to see the connection. That is because we start today’s post with a birthday boy by the name of Michael Schaupert who was born on December 2, 1849. Michael’s parents were Johann and Dorothea (Klobe) Schaupert. Let’s take a quick look at Michael’s parents. They were both from Pleidelscheim, Bavaria, Germany. The map below shows where that city is located.

Michael’s mother, Dorothea Klobe (Klaub), came with her family to America in 1840 aboard the ship, Clementine. Her parents were Paulus and Sevilla Klobe. She and her family can be found on the passenger list shown below. Dorothy was 14 years old at the time. Although it is misspelled, this form says this family’s destination was Perryville.

We have this photo of Dorothy’s father, Paulus Klobe.

Johann Schaupert, Michael’s father, was born in 1805. I think the baptism record from Stuttgart, Germany shown below is the one for Johann.

I believe I found the correct John Schaupert traveling aboard the Bremen Packet that arrived in America in 1840. Here is his name on the passenger list for that ship.

On February 25, 1849, John Schaupert married Dorothea (Klobe) Duran. It appears Dorothy was married previously to a man named Duran, but I could find no record of that marriage. Pastor E.O. Wolf performed John and Dorothea’s wedding, and he was the pastor at Peace Lutheran Church in Friedenberg, Missouri.

John and Dorothy did not waste any time having children. Nine months after being married, their son, Michael Schaupert was born. As said before, he was born on December 2nd. He was baptized at Peace, Friedenberg. It is somewhat puzzling that Michael did not show up on the 1850 census with his parents who were living in the same household as Dorothy’s parents.

Next, we find Michael in the 1860 census for Cinque Hommes Township at the age of 10. This entry is also somewhat puzzling. I figure Michael was the oldest child in this family, but there are two 16 year-old girls listed in this entry.

Michael Schaupert is found in one more census as a single man. Here is the entry for the 1870 census. His mother had died in 1865, so she is not found in this census.

We finally get to the connection between this story and the one that was written yesterday, Bicentennial Barbara Bergmann Birthday. Michael’s wife was going to be Christina Bergmann, who was the daughter of Siding George and Barbara Bergmann. Christina was born on February 16, 1854 and baptized at Peace Lutheran Church in Friedenberg. She is found in her first census in 1860 at the age of 6.

Next, we find Christina in the 1870 census at the age of 16.

I could not find any official documentation for the marriage of Michael Schaupert and Christina Bergmann, but the Friedenberg book states that they were married on February 8, 1876. According to our German Family Tree, Michael and Christina had 6 children, and all of them were boys. Two of them were born before the 1880 census was enumerated.

It would not be until 1900 before we can view this family in another census. You can see all 6 of the Schaupert boys in this entry. Those boys ranged in age from 11-23. You can see that a 14 year-old girl by the name of Wilma Hornberger was a boarder in this household. I imagine that Christina appreciated another female in this household, one that could be helpful in putting enough food on the table for all those hungry young men.

I was unable to find a photo of Christina, but here is one of Michael Schaupert.

Michael Schaupert died in 1920 at the age of 70. We can take a look at his death certificate.

Although Christina Schaupert did not die until 1941, I was unable to find her in any more census records. Her death certificate says she died at the age of 87.

Michael and Christina Schaupert were buried in the Home Cemetery in Perryville.

Another previous post told the story of one of the Schaupert boys. That post was titled, Aunt Dorothy’s Uncle Lonnie. The Aunt Dorothy in that title is my Aunt Dorothy. Today’s couple, Michael and Christina Schaupert, were her grandparents. I also suspect that Aunt Dorothy was named after her great grandmother, Dorothy Klobe.

  1. Hi Warren, we just completed your blog on mom’s ancestry. It was wonderful! Larry enjoyed it so very much. He would like to visit with you and view some of the attached documents you researched if you have time. You really are doing a wonderful job Warren. We appreciate you so much.

P.S. We also have that exact picture of Michael but I am not sure we knew who he was until we read your blog. Interesting on the name of Klobe. Mom would talk about her relatives but we do not recall her speaking about a person with that last name.

Amy will be home this afternoon. I know she will enjoy reading this information. She would often drive mom and dad to the country and they would share info about the family and visit the grave sites. Amy knows exactly where all the burial markers are and tells Larry she will take him there if he ever wants to know – too funny! She shares your interest in genealogy research. Thanks again Warren.
