Single Sarah – Daughter of Frohna Miller

The 11th of 13 children in her family was born on this date back in 1892, making her today’s birthday girl. There were two Weinhold families found in Frohna living next to the Frohna Mill which the fathers of those two families operated. Both of these families had numbers of children in the double digits. So Sarah Weinhold, today’s highlighted character, had plenty of siblings and cousins to play with while growing up.

Susanne Sarah Alida Martha Weinhold was born on October 1, 1892, so today would be her 131st birthday. Sarah was the daughter of Gotthilf and Bertha (Thomas) Weinhold. She was born during the days when Perry County kept birth records. Sarah’s is shown here in two images.

Sarah Weinhold was baptized at Concordia Lutheran Church in Frohna. An image of her baptism record from that church’s books is pictured here.

A photo of the Gotthilf Weinhold family was taken in 1899. Sarah is in the front row on the far left.

Sarah is found in her first census in 1900 at the age of 7. You might expect a larger household than you see here if she was the 11th child, but several of the Weinhold children died as infants or at a very young age. No more children would be born into this family in the 1900’s.

Sarah was a teenager when the 1910 census was taken. There were only 3 remaining children in the Weinhold household.

During the next decade, several photographs were taken that included Sarah. The one shown below is of the Gotthilf Weinhold family. It, along with many others I will display in this post, is found in a wonderful Weinhold family book that we have in our library. This photo was said to have been taken c. 1911. If it was taken in 1911, Sarah’s sister, Laura, would have been still single and not married to William Pebler, who is also in the photo. Those two were married in 1912. I think there is a chance that this photo was taken in 1912 when all these family members were gathered for the Pebler wedding. The caption will guide you to which one in the photo is Sarah.

When the Pebler/Weinhold wedding took place in 1912, a photo was taken of the entire wedding party. Sarah was one of the attendants for her sister’s wedding. You might also note that the caption indicates that William Pebler was a pastor.

Another Weinhold family photo was taken around 1918. This one shows some of the Weinhold grandchildren.

By the way, I happen to think all these photos were taken by Paul Lueders, who was married to Sarah’s cousin, Martha. Paul had a photography studio in Frohna.

Sarah was not living in Frohna in any more census entries. When the 1920 census was taken, she was living with the Pebler’s in the Bristol Township in Sherman County, Nebraska, where Rev. Pebler was a Lutheran pastor. Sarah is not given an occupation, but she was likely helping her sister, Laura, with the housework and caring for the children.

The rest of Sarah’s life was spent in St. Louis. The 1930 census shows her living in the LaRena Wilson household and working as a maid. LaRena, at the age of 72, was called the owner of a private school. There is a Wilson School in St. Louis that still exists, was founded by a Miss Wilson, and was established in 1913, but I have my doubts that this is the school owned by LaRena Wilson. I do know that LaRena, like Sarah, never married. The other member of this household was Ernest Kisro, a 45 year-old school janitor.

In 1940, we find Sarah living in the Ernest Kisro household. Ernest is called a caretaker for a private school. It is puzzling that in both the 1930 and 1940 census entries, Ernest is called married, but no wife is listed. In this entry, he has two sons, but they were not in the 1930 census.

The last census we can view is the one taken in 1950. Sarah was a maid in the William Chambers household. William and his wife were both instructors at a private university. I discovered that William had a Ph.D. from Washington University in St. Louis where he also became a professor.

Sarah Weinhold died in 1973 at the age of 81. Presently, we can view Missouri death certificates up to 1972, so we cannot view Sarah’s. Perhaps the 1973 records will be available to view later this year. Sarah is buried in the Concordia Cemetery in St. Louis.

Sarah Weinhold qualifies to be called what we refer to as “Miller Weinhold’s”. She grew up in a large household, a very highly populated “neighborhood” of Weinhold children, and is found in every census entry as living with other individuals. Like so many other similar single folks that I have written about, she certainly could not be described as being alone.
