Now Candy & Curiosities

I am posting an old story today. It is one that describes the history of a building that has been in Altenburg for well over a hundred years. This building has likely had the most different people over the years operating some sort of business there. Fairly recently, this building was once again purchased, and the new owner has transformed it into a business called Candy & Curiosities.

Not long ago, one of our patrons brought in a postcard that showed this building in the course of being constructed. If I could have found that photo easily this morning, I would have included it here. As it is, if you are at the museum someday and want to look at that postcard photo, find Gerard and ask him to find it.

Also, if you are in Altenburg on a Saturday or Sunday, stop in a patronize one of our newest businesses. Their Facebook page can be found by clicking on the link below.

  1. The store you talk about today in your blog was at one time Johnny’s Place. A tavern run by Johnny Voepel probably in the 1950’s and 1960’s (not sure of this) This was across the street from my Uncle Eddie Mueller’s butcher shop (my Uncle Eddie and his wife, Lucille lived in the house next door). Johnny and his wife, Cordie lived in the house next to the tavern. Johnny Voepel was born in late 1910 as was my dad, Gilbert. The story I was told was that they were baptized at Trinity, Altenburg on the same Sunday.
