August Thieret – St. Louis Bed Maker

Today’s birthday boy is August Heinrich Thieret, weho was born on July 10, 1878. That makes today his 146th birthday. There was another August Thieret who was born in Perry County in 1875 who was discussed in the fairly recent post titled, Arnsberg Records Discovery. The parents of today’s birthday boy were Martin and Julia (Phillips) Thieret. August was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Perryville. We can look at a transcription of his baptism record here.

August is found in the 1880 census at the age of 1. He was the firstborn child in his family. August’s father was a farmer in the Bois Brule Township.

Our German Family Tree lists 7 children born into this Thieret family. The next census we can view is the one taken in 1900. August’s father had died in 1896, so we no longer see his name as the head of this family. August’s mother is called the farmer, and we see all 7 of the Thieret children.

Now, we will take a look at the woman who would become August’s first wife. Her name was Laura Alice Brant, who was born on July 12, 1884. So, August and Laura had birthdays that were 2 days apart. Laura was the daughter of James and Belle (Wright) Brant. I am unaware of where she was baptized. Laura was already a teenager when we see her in the 1900 census. Like August, she was the oldest child in her family. Her father was a farmer in the Bois Brule Township.

August Thieret married Laura Brant on November 15, 1904 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Perryville. A transcript of that church record is pictured here. Since these records are arranged alphabetically, and both August Thieret’s were married at Immanuel, you can see both of their marriage records in this image.

We are also able to view this couple’s Missouri marriage license.

One child is listed in our GFT for August and Laura, a girl named Irene, who was baptized at Immanuel, Perryville. At some point prior to the 1910 census, the Thieret’s moved to St. Louis. August was called a laborer at a factory. There was a boarder named Jessie Phillips living in their household who was likely a relative of Laura.

August had his World War I draft registration completed in 1918. It said August was a pressman at the Smith & Davis Manufacturing Company in St. Louis.

Smith & Davis Manufacturing Company was in the business of making beds. I found this early picture of the building that housed this business in the horse and buggy days.

Next, we find the Thieret’s in the 1920 census. This time, August is called a foreman in a machine shop. Even though it does not mention bed-making, I suspect that he was still working for the Smith & Davis Company.

The 1930 census shows August with a similar description of his occupation. Irene, their daughter, is listed along with a man named Robert, who appears to be another Thieret. However, he is actually Robert Preis, who had married Irene prior to this census.

Laura Thieret died in 1934 at the age of 50. Her death certificate below gives a cerebral hemorrage as her cause of death.

Before the 1940 census was taken, August got married again. His second wife was Nancy (Turner) Reich, who had lost her husband in 1929. In the 1940 census entry, we find August and Nancy along with a stepson named Jay Reich and a boarder named Mary Eilert. August is called a foreman at a bed maufacturing company.

August had his World War II draft card completed in 1942. It once again gives the Smith & Davis Manufacturing Company as August’s employer.

The last census we are able to view is the one taken in 1950. It looks to me like August worked at the bed company during all his time in St. Louis. A son named Robert Reich is included in their household, who would have been another child of Nancy.

August Thieret died in 1951 at the age of 73. His death certificate gives a coronary occlusion as the cause of death.

Nancy Thieret died in 1968 at the age of 81. You can view her death certificate below.

August and both of his wives are all buried in the Zion Cemetery in Bel-Nor, Missouri. However, I am only able to display a gravestone photo for Nancy Thieret.

I guess August Thieret is one person about which one could honestly say that he made his bed, and then he had to lie in it.
