Gottlieb and Lena – Perryville Sandler’s

Gottlieb Johann Michael Sandler was born on November 21, 1874, thus making today his special 150th birthday. Gottlieb was the son of William and Ann (Boxdorfer) Sandler. Photos of Gottlieb’s parents are displayed below.

Gottlieb was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Perryville. The image shown here of his baptism record is rather unusual. I almost did not find it. It looks as if the pastor placed this record in the books after he forgot to put it there. It is shoved into an empty space at the top of a page. It says that he was baptized in his home, so that may be why the pastor neglected to put it in the proper chronological order of baptisms.

Gottlieb got married prior to the next census we can view that was taken in 1900, so we will now turn our attention to the woman who would become his bride. Her name was Magdalena Margaretta Dippold, who was born on May 16, 1878. She mainly went by the name Lena during her life, so that is what I will use. Lena was the daughter of Frederick and Sophia (Kropf) Dippold. Like Gottlieb, she was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Perryville. We can view her baptism record here.

Next, we find Lena in the 1940 census. This time there were 3 sons working at the shoe factory. Included in the household was Lena’s brother, Martin, a 59 year-old bachelor.

The last census the public can view is the one taken in 1950. Lena was the head of the household, but all the other members of her household were Dippold’s. Martin was still living with her, as well as her brother William, a widower with 2 sons. All of the Dippold’s had various jobs. The one that is intriguing is that Melvin Dippold was the manager of an airport.

Gottlieb and Lena Sandler were one of those couples who were born, baptized, confirmed, married, raised a family, as well as buried while being members of the same Lutheran congregation. About the only exception was Gottlieb’s trip to a St. Louis hospital to die.
