I will have the privilege of attending the installation of a former student of mine at a Lutheran church not far from here later today, so I only have limited time to work on a blog post. I am sharing this old post about someone I have called the “Ridge Charles Weber”. I think our blog has included at least 4 posts about men named Charles Weber.
When I reread this post, I noticed that back in 2020, I mentioned that this Charles Weber was married at Emmaus Lutheran Church, but I was unable to display that church marriage record. Now that Ancestry.com includes a collection of Missouri Synod church records, I am able to show that marriage record.
I have now run across another document that I did not find for the original article about the Ridge Charles Weber. Below, you can read an obituary for Charles that was printed in a newspaper. This is a document that confirms another fact that was mentioned when the original post about Charles was published in 2020. In that post, I wrote that a note about Charles’s death in a family history says that he died while ushering on a Sunday morning at St. John’s Lutheran Church in St. Louis. That fact is pointed out in this obituary.
I will be at Messiah Lutheran Church in Carlyle, Illinois this afternoon. I now know that this congregation is located about 13 miles north of New Minden. New Minden is the town in which we find one of the congregations that was a charter member of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, St. John’s Lutheran Church. I have never been to New Minden, and I have discovered that St. John’s is located right on Highway 127. I have planned to drive that route to get to Carlyle so that I can see that congregation’s sanctuary, which was built before our 1867 church building here in Altenburg. In fact, some say that our church was designed after the church in New Minden. I am looking forward to seeing that historic building. I wonder if my wife will tolerate me stopping to take a photograph or two.
