Edgar and Margarete – Perryville Weinrich’s

Edgar George Weinrich was born on October 28, 1890, so he is today’s birthday boy. He would be celebrating his 135th birthday today. Edgar was the son of Ferdinand and Sophia (Bergmann) Weinrich. He was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Perryville. We can take a look at his baptism record below from that congregation’s books. I almost did not find this record because it looks like it was written on a separate sheet of paper and inserted in amongst the rest of the 1890 baptisms.

Edgar is found in the 1900 census at the age of 9. His father was a farmer in the Central Township, the township in which the city of Perryville is found.

Next, we find the Weinrich family in the 1910 census. Edgar was 18 years old and not given an occupation. His father was still farming in the same location.

We find the Ferdinand Weinrich farm on the 1915 plat maps for Perry County. You can see that they did not live far away from Perryville.

Edgar had his World War I draft registration completed in June of 1917. He is given a Perryville address. He was still single and working with his father on his farm.

Edgar must have been courting his future wife when the above draft registration was completed because he would get married in October of that year. So, we will now take a look at the woman who would become Edgar’s bride. Her name was Margarete Adeline Bienlein, who was born on October 27, 1898. That means she would celebrate her birthday on the day before Edgar would celebrate his birthday. Margarete was the daughter of Michael and Matilda (Millfelt) Bienlein. Matilda was Michael’s second wife, and I suspect she was a Catholic. So, since Margarete’s baptism record is not listed in our German Family Tree, I think she was baptized in a Catholic parish. Margarete is found in the 1900 census at the age of 2. Good luck reading this Salem Township census entry. I can tell you that it says Margarete’s father was a farmer in that township.

We can view a much better census image when the 1910 census was taken. Margarete was 12 years old, and this time, the Bienlein family was living in the Bois Brule Township.

Edgar Weinrich married Margarete Bienlein on October 2, 1917. According to the Missouri marriage license below, this couple was married by Adolph Schmidt, who was a justice of the peace.

We can also take a look at this marriage certificate for this pair.

Edgar and Margarete had 2 children. I know that the first child was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Perryville. I think their second child born in 1926 was also baptized at Immanuel, but the baptism records for that congregation during that year are not included in Ancestry.com’s Missouri Synod collection of church records. In the 1920 census, we find the Weinrich’s living in the Central Township where Edgar was farming. Their first child, Edna, is included in this entry.

In the 1930 census, we see that this couple’s second child had been born during the previous decade. However, that child is called a son in this entry. Actually, both of the Weinrich children were girls.

The Weinrich’s can be found in the 1940 census with two daughters, Edna and Vera. Edgar was still farming, and Edna was working at the shoe factory in Perryville.

Edgar had his World War II draft card completed when the United States entered that war.

The last census the public can view is the one taken in 1950. Edgar and Margarete had an empty nest, and Edgar was still farming near Perryville.

Margarete Weinrich died in 1969 at the age of 70. Her death certificate shown here says that she died as a patient in the Perry County Memorial Hospital in Perryville.

Today’s bride and groom had birthdays just one day apart from one another. I have to wonder if they might have celebrated their birthdays on the same day. They not only were both born in October, but they also were married in October. That month must have been this pair’s month for celebrating.

During this past week’s immigration conference, I heard a term that I had never heard before. Someone referred to a couple as being “daughtered out”, meaning that their surname would not be carried forth to the next generation because all their children were girls, and, if the daughters got married, they would then carry their husband’s surname. We would have to say that Edgar and Margarete were “daughtered out”.
