Previous posts have been written about men named George Bergmann. In fact, today’s George Bergmann was likely named after his grandfather, George Bergmann, who was one of the men who originally formed the church which became known as Peace Lutheran Church in Friedenberg.

Johann George Bergmann was born on August 27, 1854, so today would be his 172nd birthday. George was the son of Johann Peter and Sophia (Poehner) Bergmann. He was baptized at Peace Lutheran Church in Friedenberg, so we cannot view his baptism record. George is found at the age of 6 in the 1860 census. His father was a farmer in the St. Mary’s Township of Perry County. You can see George’s grandfather, George, at the age of 60, living in this household.

Next, we find George in the 1870 census as a teenager. This time, the Bergmann’s were living in the Cinque Hommes Township, and George’s father was still farming.

George would get married before the 1880 census was compiled, so we will now take a look at the woman who would become his bride. Her name was Catherine Anne Buettner, who was born on July 14, 1856. Our German Family Tree spells her surname as Buettner, but almost all of Catherine’s documents spell her name as Boettner, so I will use that spelling. Either way, it was pronounced as Bitner. Catherine was the daughter of Heinrich and Barbara (Lang) Boettner. She was also baptized at Peace, Friedenberg. Catherine is found in the 1860 census at the age of 3. Her father was a blacksmith in Perryville.

In the 1870 census, Catherine was 13 years old. As you can see, she was the oldest child in the Boettner family. Her father was still a blacksmith, and 2 apprentice blacksmiths were living in this household.

George Bergmann married Catharine Boettner on January 21, 1879. By that time, Immanuel Lutheran Church had been established in Perryville, and that is where this couple was married. We can view their church marriage record below.

In the 1880 census, George and Catherine are found living in the Central Township where George was farming. Their first child had been born in late 1879, but died in early 1880, so no children are found in the entry for the Bergmann’s shown below.

Altogether, the Bergmann’s had 8 children according to both our German Family Tree and Family Search. All of their children were baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Perryville. Their last child was born in 1896, and then George Bergmann died in 1897 at the age of 43. His death and burial record is found in the books of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Perryville. It gives a cause of death, but it is in German, and I am unable to read it.

Catherine is found as a widow in the 1900 census. Catherine is called a farmer, but she had 2 sons who are called farm laborers, along with a boarder who was also helping with the farming. There were 6 children in the Bergmann household.

Catherine Bergmann died in 1908 at the age of 52. A death record for her can be found in St. Louis. I think it says she died at a Baptist hospital there. That death record is displayed here in 2 images.

Both George and Catherine Bergmann are buried in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Perryville.

The name, George Bergmann, was a common name showing up in a few Bergmann family trees during the early history of Perry County. It was a name especially associated with Peace, Friedenberg and Immanuel, Perryville.
