I am going to begin today’s post by once again showing the photo including several members of the August Ude family. The members of this family that will be the subject of today’s post are the ones indicated by the red arrows. The 3 brothers highlighted yesterday were all involved in running grocery stores. The 3 siblings for today have something else in common. They each were involved with full time church work. One was a Lutheran pastor. One was a Lutheran teacher. And the third was the wife of a Lutheran teacher.

Maria Ude was married to Edward Schaumloeffel who was a Lutheran teacher. I will not discuss her story in this post because her story was already written in the post titled, A Bucket of Beer with Minnie, Music, and Math. Obviously, Maria is the only woman in the above photo.

Next, I will discuss the life story of the Lutheran teacher, Herman Ude. He was born on March 1, 1874 and baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church in New Wells, Missouri. I displayed the 1880 census that included Herman in the post I wrote two days ago, Prelude to Ude’s Food.

In the early 1890’s, Herman probably attended Addison Teachers Seminary in the Chicago area to be trained as a Lutheran educator. It appears that Herman accepted his first teaching position in Detroit, Michigan. On August 29, 1895, Herman Ude married Martha Lehman in Detroit. The Michigan marriage record for that wedding says that Herman was a teacher.

I can also display a more complete marriage record for this couple. About all I can tell you about Martha was that her father was named Joachim, and she was born on May 11, 1874 in Germany.

By the time of the 1900 census, this couple had two children.

Next, we find Herman and Martha in the 1910 census. We then see 6 children in the household.

In 1918, Herman had his World War I draft registration completed.

The 1920 census shows the family still living in Detroit. Their last son, Lloyd Ude, had arrived during that last decade, making a total of 7 children.

The 1930 census shows the family living in Dearborn, Michigan. I think you can call Dearborn a municipality within the metropolitan area of Detroit. I might also add that during the time when Herman was a teacher in Detroit, the Ford Motor Company became a very large contributor to the automobile industry. In this census, one of the Ude sons was working at an auto plant.

A 1939 Dearborn city directory said that Herman was not just an educator, but also the principal of Bethlehem Lutheran School. Several other Ude family members are also shown in this directory.

The house found at 7752 Normile in Dearborn is shown below.

Martha Ude died in 1933 at the age of 59. The 1940 census is the last one we can view for the Herman Ude family.

Herman Ude died in 1954 at the age of 80. Martha Ude was buried at Woodmere Cemetery in Detroit, but I was unable to find burial information for Herman.

Before I move on, let me mention just one of Herman’s children, Esther Ude. She would marry Phillip Schroeder who would become a Lutheran pastor who spent his entire ministry at various locations in Michigan. Phillip spent part of his early life in Auburn, Michigan, and I have a brother who lives in Auburn, where he was a teacher and principal for many years. Phillip and Esther would also have a son, Robert Schroeder, who became a Lutheran minister.

Now, we will turn our attention to the other Ude son, Friedrich August Ude, who, like his father, went by the name August. He was the pastor mentioned in the previous two posts that got married in Thayer County, Nebraska in 1886 and became the magnet who drew 3 of his brothers to Nebraska.

Today, I will attempt to tell what happened to Rev. August Ude after he left that area of Nebraska. However, before I do, there are a few census forms I have not displayed yet that include August. First, here is one for 1880 that shows him as a student at the seminary in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

After graduating, August took his first call to Jefferson County, Nebraska where we find him in an 1885 Nebraska state census. I find it interesting that right above his name are some with the surname Uphoff. August’s brother, Carl, married an Uphoff.

The above census record makes me think I was wrong in saying that Rev. Ude was a pastor in Deshler. Now I think he may have been the pastor in Gladstone, which is in Jefferson County.

I think Rev. Ude left Nebraska sometime before 1889, because Carl’s marriage record shows a different pastor performing his wedding in that year. I think he next was the pastor at St. John’s Lutheran Church in South Branch, Minnesota. This is what that church looks like today.

In 1894, Rev. Ude took a call to another St. John’s Lutheran Church that was not far from South Branch. It was located in Willow Creek, MN. The map below shows several locations in which Rev. Ude served in Minnesota. You can see how close South Branch and Willow Creek were.

When Rev. Ude was the pastor in Willow Creek, this photo was taken.

We find the Ude household in the 1900 census for Blue Earth County where Willow Creek is located. By that time, there were 7 children in this family.

It must have been right before the 1910 census was taken that Rev. August Ude moved his family to Wykoff, Minnesota. He became the pastor at yet another St. John’s Lutheran Church there.

The 1920 census shows this family living in Wykoff.

They are found once again in the same place in 1920.

The last census in which we find August and Johanna was the one in 1930. I just showed August here, but Johanna was on the next page. They had an empty nest.

August Ude died in 1931 at the age of 69; Johanna Ude died in 1945 at the age of 78. I could not find burial information for them.

I just want to point out some information about two of Rev. Ude’s sons, Walter and Arthur. Each of them earned the title of respect, Dr., to place in front of their names. Walter became a radiologist, and Arthur became a dentist.

Adolph Ude, August’s brother from Deshler, also had a son, Elmer, who became a Lutheran pastor who served in California. For a while he was the pastor in Hollywood. Also, Elmer had a son who became a Lutheran pastor. As it turned out, there were plenty of Lutheran church workers who came from this Ude family that had its beginnings in our area.

In closing, I feel I must share with you the many connections to my life that showed up in this Ude family’s history. A friend of mine from my time at Seward married another Seward student who was from Deshler, Nebraska. The pastor who married my wife and me, Rev. Bruce Zagel, was related to the Rev. Martin Zagel who married Eleanore Ude. Esther Ude married a man from Auburn, Michigan where my brother lives. A friend of mine was once pastor of the church in Willow Creek, and his son, one of my former students, is now the pastor in Truman, Minnesota, just down the road from there. If you read the autobiography of August Ude, Sr. in yesterday’s post, it mentioned he once had a garden right near Shaw’s Garden in St. Louis, which I remember visiting on a field trip when I was in school. Finally, during my time serving in south-central Minnesota, I became friends with two men who were educators and principals at St. John’s, Wykoff. The last three days of research have been a wild and interesting ride for me.
