Back in 2019, this story of a double wedding that took place in Altenburg in 1873 was published. That story highlighted the fact that 2 Grebing siblings got married at Trinity Lutheran Church in Altenburg on the same day. Now, 4 years later, those two couples would be celebrating their 150th wedding anniversaries.
German Lutherans are often pictured as penny-pinchers. I probably qualify to fit into that category myself. I cannot help but think that Hartmann Grebing, the father of the two Grebing’s who got married on that day, was the one who suggested these two get married on the same day in order to save him some money.
This double wedding ceremony would have taken place in Trinity’s 1867 sanctuary, which would have been quite new back in those days. That church building will be the location of the presentations which will be made during our immigration conference later this week.
