Carl and Mary – Longtown Weinrich’s

Mary Caroline Hoehn was born on October 3, 1882, so she qualifies to be today’s birthday girl. Mary would be celebrating her 142nd birthday today. Mary was the daughter of Ferdinand and Dorothea (Rauh) Hoehn. She was baptized at Peace Lutheran Church in Friedenberg, so we are unable to view her baptism record. Also, because we are unable to view the 1890 census, Mary was already a teenager when we see her in the 1900 census. Her father was a farmer in the Cinque Hommes Township.

That would be the only census entry in which we find Mary as a single woman. So, let’s take a look at the man who would become her husband. His name was Carl Frederick Weinrich, who was born on October 20, 1880, meaning that today’s bride and groom both had October birthdays. Carl was the son of Heinrich and Margaret (Bergmann) Weinrich. He was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Perryville. Since that church’s records are now available on Ancestry.com, I am able to display an image of that baptism record below.

Since Carl was born too late in 1880 to make it into that year’s census, we also only find him in the 1900 census prior to his marriage. In 1900, he was 17 years old, and his father was a farmer in the Cinque Hommes Township. His mother had died in 1894, so she is not found in this entry.

Carl Weinrich married Mary Hoehn on Christmas Day, December 25, 1905 at Zion Lutheran Church in Longtown. It was almost certainly one of those cases when the bride and groom had to wait until the Advent season was complete before getting married. In yesterday’s post about the Funke’s, the first and 12th marriage records in the Zion, Longtown books were mentioned. Today’s marriage was the 16th wedding found in those books, and it is the only one that occurred in 1905. Both the bride and the groom were said to be from Longtown.

The German Family Tree lists 2 children born to this pair. The second child, born in 1915, died at the age of one month. Both children were baptized at Zion Lutheran Church in Longtown. When the 1910 census was taken, Carl and Mary had one child, a daughter named Olivia. Carl was a farmer in the Cinque Hommes Township and had a young man, William Kiefer, helping with the farming.

The 1915 plat maps for Perry County show the C.F. Weinrich farm located west of Longtown. His land was also surrounded by several Hoehn farms.

Carl had his World War I draft registration completed in 1918. It gives him a rural Perryville address.

The 1920 census shows the same trio, with Carl still farming.

Next, we find Carl, Mary, and Olivia in the 1930 census. Nothing has changed except their ages.

Olivia Weinrich married Edmund Lohmann in 1931. That couple had 2 living children in 1940, and they were living in the Carl and Mary Weinrich household when the census was taken that year.

Carl had his World War II draft card completed in 1942.

A tragic turn took place in 1943. Mary Weinrich died at the age of 60. Her death certificate below says she died as a patient at the Missouri State Hospital in Farmington. Apparently, she was not at that institution for very long. This document says that her stay there was just 28 days.

An obituary was published for Mary in the Perry County Republican. It makes no mention of the place of Mary’s death, and it says she had been in failing health for several months. Mary’s death record in the Zion, Longtown books says she died of pneumonia, which does not agree with the cause of death on the above death certificate.

Carl is found in the 1950 census as a widower. Edmund Lohmann was the head of the household and doing the farming.

Carl Weinrich died in 1963 at the age of 83. We can also look at his death certificate. It mentions prostate cancer as a contributory cause of his death.

Carl and Mary Weinrich are buried together in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Longtown.

I am never happy to find a death certificate that says a person died at the state hospital in Farmington. Mental health issues are not a new problem, and throughout history, there have been many different approaches taken in treating these issues. I also know that sometimes families prefer not to put a family member’s struggles with mental health out in public. I do know that mental health issues can cause much stress in a family, and it likely resulted in much distress for the Weinrich family. It gives me at least a sense of comfort seeing that the gravestone above gives the message, “Rest in Peace”, and we trust that all health problems, physical or mental, will not exist in our heavenly home.
