The Copernicus and the Johann Georg Set Sail

You will have the opportunity to read an old post again today. November 3rd marks the 186th anniversary of the first two ships that were part of the Gesellschaft to depart Germany to head towards the United States on this day in 1838. The Copernicus was the first to leave, followed by the Johann Georg a few hours later. Three more ships would depart on later days.

As I picture it, the passengers on these ships may have experienced some cool or even cold November days in the early days of their voyage. As they headed closer to the equator, they may have eventually become uncomfortably warm. Those days and weeks aboard those ships would have cemented memories in their minds that would remain for their lifetime. In a way, they were like the Children of Israel being set free and on their way the their Promised Land, but it was not going to always be a pleasant trip.

I should be back in the blog-writing business tomorrow. Today, I have to watch a championship volleyball game in Springfield, Illinois. It should be exciting.
