We have a busy day at the museum today. We have a tour scheduled for a group of missionaries from Latin America. We have been told that there will be about 120 people coming. That will keep us busy almost all day, so today you get an old story. I will not go into detail about this tour because Denise Hellwege is planning to write her Friday blog post about it.
The attached story was the first one to be published on an August 6th, but it is one of those rare stories on this blog that is not based on an event that took place on the date the post is written. This one has no connection to August 6th. When I ran across this post, I figured it would give me the opportunity to give our readers and potential visitors an update on what is happening with the Old Bank Coffee Shop in Altenburg.
The attached article talks about a time when the Old Bank moved across the street to a new bank building. A while back, it was discovered that the floor in the Old Bank was not safe and had to be removed and replaced. At about the same time, the business across the street called Say Grace, another food preparation establishment, had discontinued its operations. You can read about that business in this article that gives a history of the building which housed that business in the post, Hardware Rudy’s. In that article, it says that building, also located across the street from the Old Bank, was originally called the Mueller Hardware Store. Here is an old photo showing what that building looked like as a hardware store.

Since both the Old Bank and the Old Hardware Store are both owned by Charles Grebing, an agreement was made with Lindy Roth, the proprietor of the Old Bank Coffee Shop, to move her “breakfast joint” across the street to the hardware store. If you are planning a visit to Altenburg these days and are looking for a good place to have breakfast, you will find the Old Bank Coffee Shop across the street in the old hardware store. I eat there about 4 days a week, and I highly recommend it.
It remains to be seen if Lindy Roth will decide to move back across the street to the Old Bank. I will tell you this. Lindy’s maiden name is Mueller, so the old Mueller Hardware Store once again has a Mueller operating a business in this historic building in downtown Altenburg.

Thanks for keeping us out-of-towners up to date on the businesses in Altenburg. See you in October.
