Arno, Walter, and Norman – KIA in WWI

On this Memorial Day of 2026, I decided to share the stories of 3 young men who are found in our German Family Tree that were each killed in action (KIA) during World War I. First of all, the post that I attached below tells the tale of a man who was even born in Germany before being sent overseas to fight against his country of birth. His name was Arno Schubert.

The second such story of a man who died while fighting in World War I is about a man named Walter Weber. He was born and raised in Jacob, Illinois before being sent off to fight a war. His story can be found by clicking on the link below.

Private Walter A. Weber – Killed in Action

The third similar story is about Norman Miesner, another one who was born and raised in Jacob, Illinois. His story can be found by clicking this link.

The Last Full Measure

Arno Schubert is buried in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Friedheim. Walter Weber is buried in the Tower Grove Cemetery in Murphysboro, and Norman Miesner is buried in the Christ Lutheran Cemetery in Jacob.

These three stories are not the only ones found on this blog that tell the story of a soldier killed in action during an American war. One of the amazing facts about some of these stories is that they tell of men of German descent who, as American citizens, served their country in the miliary and went to fight against Germany, a country that was very special to them. We remember such men and women today who gave their lives in service to our country to preserve the freedoms that we have as Americans.
