Not long ago, I wrote a post titled, Bergmann Boyfriend’s Bicentennial, in which the highlighted couple was made up of a Bergmann and a Fassold. You will read about another such couple that was united later in time. This time, the couple was made up of a Bergmann man and a Fassold woman. We will begin with today’s birthday girl.

Mary Anna Fassold was born on March 27, 1867, the daughter of Michael and Kunigunda (Wirth) Fassold. Mary Anna was the firstborn child in this Fassold family and baptized at Peace Lutheran Church in Friedenberg, Missouri. I am not able to display the original record for that baptism, but I can show a short biography of Mary Anna from the Friedenberg Remembrances book.

We find Mary Anna in her first census in 1870 at the age of 2. Her family lived in the Brazeau Township where her father was a farmer.

In the 1880 census, this Fassold family was living in the Cinque Hommes Township. Mary Anna was 13 years old. She had just one sibling, a boy named Peter, who was about 10 years younger.

Now, we will turn our attention to the Bergmann in this story. His name was Henry Bergmann, who was born on January 13, 1864. He was the son of John and Salome (Hoehn) Bergmann, whose story was told in the post, Return to a Double Wedding, which was published not long ago. Like Mary Anna, Henry was baptized at Peace Lutheran Church in Friedenberg. Below is Henry’s biography from Friedenberg Remembrances.

Henry shows up in the 1870 census for Cinque Hommes Township at the age of 6. Another fairly recent story was written about Henry’s older brother, Fritz, titled, Fritz and Mary – The Bergmann Grandchildren.

Next, we find Henry in the 1880 census where the Bergmann family was living in the Central Township. At the age of 16, Henry was working on his father’s farm.

On October 27, 1887, Henry Bergmann married Mary Anna Fassold at Peace Lutheran Church. We can view this couple’s marriage license.

Our German Family Tree lists 6 children born to this pair. The 1900 census shows them with 5 children. There was also a farm hand living in their household.

When the 1910 census was taken, we find the following Bergmann household. By this time, their oldest child, Ida, had married, plus another child had been born, so we still find 5 children.

The Bergmann family was living in the Union Township in 1920. The land maps produced in 1915 already shows them living not far from Longtown. You can see some Fassold land nearby Henry’s property.

Below is the 1920 census for the Bergmann’s in Union Township. Just two daughters remained in their household.

The last census in which we find Henry Bergmann was the one taken in 1930. Living with them was their granddaughter, Ruth Hacker. Ruth’s parents, Clara and Martin Hacker were still living together in the same household in 1930, so I do not know why Ruth was being cared for by her grandparents.

Henry Bergmann died in 1938 at the age of 74. Below is his death certificate.

Mary Anna is still found living with her granddaughter in the village of Longtown when the 1940 census was taken.

Mary Anna Bergmann died in 1960 at the age of 92. I find it interesting that it is her daughter, the mother of Ruth Hacker, who is the informant on this document.

Henry and Mary Anna are buried together in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Longtown.

It is a puzzle to me that Ruth Hacker was raised by her grandparents when her parents were still together and living not far from the Bergmann’s. It appears that Ruth was their only child. Perhaps one of our readers has an answer to this puzzle.
