Longtown’s William Weinrich and His Wife

On February 15, 1872, a baby boy was born to Heinrich and Margaretha (Bergmann) Weinrich. They named this baby, Wilhelm Gotthold Weinrich, but he mostly went by the name William. He was baptized at Peace Lutheran Church in Friedenberg, so I am unable to display an image of his baptism record. William shows up in the 1880 census at the age of 7. His father was a farmer in the Cinque Hommes Township.

Because we cannot view the 1890 census, and because William would get married prior to 1900, we will now find out a little bit about the woman who would become his wife. Her name was Agnes Barbara Hoehn, who was born on June 15, 1877. Agnes was the daughter of Ferdinand and Dorothea (Rauh) Hoehn. Like her future husband, she was baptized at Peace Lutheran Church in Friedenberg. Agnes is found in her first census entry in 1900 at the age of 3. Her father was also a farmer in the Cinque Hommes Township.

William Weinrich married Agnes Hoehn on February 22, 1898. Since all of their children would be baptized at Zion Lutheran Church in Longtown, and that congregation had been established in 1897, I thought I’d find their marriage record in the books of that congregation, but that is not the case. This couple was married at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Perryville. Below is a transcription of their church marriage record.

We can also take a look at the Missouri marriage license for this pair.

This couple had 4 children, 3 girls and a boy. The boy died before his 2nd birthday, so we never see him in a census entry. When the 1900 census was compiled, we find the young Weinrich couple with just their first daughter. William was farming in the Cinque Hommes Township.

As you can see in the baptism record for their first child, Zita, she was just the 15th child to be baptized at Zion, Longtown.

The 1915 plat maps for Perry County show the William Weinrich farm. Although you cannot tell it from this image, this farm was located just north of Longtown.

Next, we find the Weinrich’s in the 1920 census with their 3 daughters.

The 1940 census includes this entry for the Weinrich household. Their daughter, Zita, had married Enos Bachmann in 1921, and that couple had a few children, but by the time of the 1940 census, Enos had died, leaving Zita a widow.

Enos Bachmann actually had quite a tragic end. First of all, in the 1930 census, he is found living at the state hospital in Farmington, and then in 1932, he drowned in the Diversion Channel near Cape Girardeau. His death certificate below says it was an accidental drowning.

Agnes Weinrich died in 1942 at the age of 64. We can view her death certificate below. It states that she died at the Lutheran Hospital in St. Louis.

An obituary for Agnes was published in a local newspaper.

Another daughter, Lorena, married Edward Wahlers, and when the 1950 census was taken, we find William as a widower, living with the Wahlers family.

William Weinrich died in 1956 at the age of 84. His death certificate says he died at the Perryville Nursing Home.

William and Agnes Weinrich are buried together in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Longtown.

The surname, Weinrich, is a common one found in the books of Zion Lutheran Church in Longtown. If you do a search on Findagrave.com for that surname at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery, you come up with 38 results. Findagrave.com has just 313 total grave sites for that cemetery, so the surname, Weinrich makes up 12% of those grave sites. I suspect there are still plenty of Weinrich’s living in that neighborhood.
