I just cannot seem to resist a bicentennial birthday, and I found one for today. Johann George Amschler was born on June 4, 1824, so he qualifies for that distinction today. And it just so happens that I have already written a post about him and his wife, so I am republishing that story today. I think I will also appreciate having a day off from writing a new story.

Although I do not know many folks around here that still carry the Amschler name, it seems like whenever I mention it in conversation, it is very common for people to say that there are Amschler’s in their family trees. During the early years the Amschler name became a prominent one at Grace Lutheran Church in Uniontown, but then it spread to other nearby areas, inclunding across the river, where it became a fairly common one at Christ Lutheran Church in Jacob, Illinois. I also discovered that there are quite a few Amschler’s have been buried in Catholic cemeteries in Perry County, so this name also spilled into the German Catholic community.
