I did not expect to find a man by the name of Marconi among the names which are tied to Perry County. When Louis Marconi arrived in America in 1923 from Trieste, Italy, the passenger list for the Martha Washington gave his name as Luigi. He arrived in New York, but made his way to St.Louis.
Twelve years later, Louis married Audrey Mueller. Here is where the Perry County connection can be found. Audrey was the daughter of Arthur Mueller of Wittenberg, Missouri. By 1930, Arthur was a foreman at a rock quarry there. Audrey was also the granddaughter of Joseph Mueller. We did a story on him several months ago….Yet Another Mueller Question. They were married in St. Louis.
The following city directory from Peoria, Illinois, includes a Louis (Audrey) Marconi.
If this is indeed the Marconi couple that this post describes, then Louis must have been a stone mason.
Louis lived until 1976. He died in St. Louis. Audrey did not die until 2002.
If you follow Audrey’s family history backwards, you will find the names Mueller, Buenger, Palisch, and Weber. Who would have thought that a Luigi Marconi would join those names in a family’s history?
One final note: This memorial stone can be found on the sidewalk surrounding the monument we have in the park across the street from the museum.
Our friend from the Wittenberg Cousins, Alice Rau, should be able to tell us more stories about the Marconi-Mueller couple.
