As a result of a misunderstanding, I was not able to research for a new story today, so I found this old story to re-share. It tells the tale of a husband and wife that were both born on this date, September 11th. The husband would be 136 years old today, and his wife would be 135.
The husband, Rev. George Fleiss was once the pastor of Zion Lutheran in Pocahontas. In the previous post, I suggested that he may have left Zion to become the pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Boonville, Missouri. Now I have confirmed this fact by finding this list of early pastors at that congregation that can be found in the book, Heart of Missouri.

Since this story was published back in 2017, I now have access to some church records from Immanuel Lutheran Church in Perryville, so I am able to display Lena Angermann’s baptism record.

I also found evidence that Lena’s family must have moved to St. Louis before she was confirmed. Below is her confirmation record from the books of Immanuel Lutheran Church in St. Louis.

This would explain how Lena became acquainted with George. They must have met when George was attending Concordia Seminary in St. Louis. Not only that, but I now know how to find more marriage records for weddings that took place in St. Louis. This couple was married at Holy Cross Lutheran Church on October 14, 1914 according to the St. Louis marriage record displayed here.

Now you know just a bit more about this couple that may have shared birthday cakes throughout their married life. And I guess I have discovered that I have become a better researcher over the years by finding more resources to use.

Warren, I was saddened by this post. I saw a warning flag when you displayed the records for our sister congregation in Booneville. To have that many pastors serve such short tenures usually indicates a problem within a congregation which unfortunately cannot be corrected. Similarly, when searching for a new pastor, should a congregation see papers on a pastor that has never stayed more than a couple of years at any one congregation, that pastor should be avoided because his record unfortunately indicates a problem with him. When you have been around the block as we have, we learn these warning signs. Pastors and congregations should learn to see them also. Another great blog. Keep up the good work. Even your reruns are great. Thanks!
In Christ,
The Rev.
Yes I totally agree. Kinda hard to tap into those records. Still searching for listing of seminary students in St. Louis from the beginning. Looking for Rev Charles Carl Phillip Gross graduation from seminary about 1855-1856. Ordained in Baltimore by Rev Keyl and married in 1857 in Washington DC and first charge in 1858 Bethlehem Lutheran Richmond Va. A lot of brick walls. Feels so wonderful to finally find the source and info. Thank you
